Pressure should support the phrase
Begin moving the bellows just before the note, then use a small, continuous motion. The goal is not maximum volume but a stable air reserve while the key valve is open.
Coordinate, do not chase
Plan bellows direction around musical phrases. Abruptly reversing the hand on an important note can create an unwanted swell or gap.
Leaks change the workload
If the bellows collapse quickly or require unusually large movement, inspect external folds and seals. Stop pumping if something resists or makes a tearing sound.
Beginner practice
- Hold one middle note for eight slow counts.
- Repeat while making the bellows motion smaller.
- Play Sa Re Ga Ma with one even dynamic level.
Common mistakes
- Pumping once for every note.
- Using force to compensate for a possible leak.
- Letting the bellows fully empty mid-phrase.
