Control dust and moisture
Store the instrument closed in a stable, dry room away from direct heat and damp floors. Sudden humidity changes can affect wood, leather, cloth, and metal parts differently.
Diagnose before opening
Record which key, stop, pressure level, and direction of bellows reproduce a fault. A buzz may come from a loose part or debris rather than tuning.
Know the safe boundary
External cleaning and gentle operation are routine care. Reed filing, valve replacement, scale-changer alignment, and bellows repair require model-specific knowledge.
Beginner practice
- Inspect folds, case seams, keys, and knobs monthly.
- Exercise every key and stop gently after long storage.
- Keep a dated note of persistent buzzes or slow reeds.
Common mistakes
- Using household oil or spray inside the instrument.
- Storing it in a sealed damp case.
- Tuning a reed before checking for leaks, debris, or loose fittings.
