Start with five neighbouring notes
Use Sa Re Ga Ma Pa and return. Keep fingertips close to the keys and listen for equal note length before changing tempo.
Cross without a jump
When a longer scale requires a thumb crossing, practise the crossing pair alone. The wrist should guide a small lateral movement rather than lifting the whole hand.
Patterns reveal weak transitions
Three- and four-note alankars repeat the same transition from several scale degrees, making uneven fingers easier to identify.
Beginner practice
- Play Sa Re Ga Ma Pa at 60 bpm.
- Repeat the least even pair five times.
- Use a three-note alankar once up and once down.
Common mistakes
- Raising fingers far above the keys.
- Increasing tempo before note lengths match.
- Locking the wrist during a thumb crossing.
