How to Find Your Sa

Choose a practical tonic by checking low, middle, and upper notes against a quiet reference.

Begin near speaking comfort

Hum or sing an easy sustained note without searching upward. Match its nearest harmonium key, then test the surrounding tonic choices.

Check three points

Try lower Pa, middle Sa, and upper Sa. If one end requires pressing, breathiness, or a changed vocal quality, move the tonic and test again.

Context can change the choice

A teacher, ensemble, fixed-pitch instrument, composition range, or current vocal condition may require a different Sa on another day.

Beginner practice

  1. Use Find My Sa for a starting pitch.
  2. Test lower Pa and upper Sa quietly.
  3. Save the Sa only after both ends feel sustainable.

Common mistakes

  • Choosing the highest impressive tonic.
