The sound begins differently
On a harmonium, airflow and valve opening shape the start and continuity of a note. On an electronic keyboard, a sensor triggers a synthesised or sampled sound, often with velocity and sustain controls.
Sustain and dynamics
A harmonium can sustain while air continues, but individual key velocity is limited compared with a touch-sensitive keyboard. Bellows phrasing affects the whole active texture.
Use each tool for its strength
A browser or electronic keyboard is convenient for silent mapping, headphones, MIDI, and fixed tempo. Acoustic harmonium practice is necessary for bellows coordination and the real reed response.
Beginner practice
- Play the same five-note phrase on both instruments.
- Compare note attack, sustain, and release.
- Mark which skills transfer and which require acoustic bellows.
Common mistakes
- Assuming identical key layout means identical technique.
- Using a sustain pedal as a substitute for bellows phrasing.
- Expecting Sargam labels to be fixed to Western keys.
